The Duchy of Lancaster is a private estate owned by Her Majesty The Queen, as Duke of Lancaster. The rural estate consists of approximately 45,000 acres of land in England and Wales which is divided into five ‘Rural Surveys’ and comprises commercial, agricultural, and residential properties (Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Southern). Additionally, the Duchy has a significant commercial property portfolio known as the ‘Urban Survey’, as well as separate minerals and foreshore portfolios.

The position

A unique opportunity has arisen for a dynamic Estates Director to take a lead role in the growing rural team undertaking estate management and strategic delivery of projects across the Yorkshire Survey and on the Lancashire Foreshore.

The Yorkshire Survey extends to 15,500 acres and is comprised of five estates across North Yorkshire and a diverse mix of assets including livestock and arable farms, commercial property, forestry, moorland, Common Land, mineral assets, residential dwellings and holiday cottages, a portfolio of small-scale development sites, as well as strategic land. The Foreshore extends to approximately 87,000 acres and includes an interesting range of assets ranging from salt marsh grazing and moorings through to renewable energy infrastructure. There is a further portfolio of urban assets at Harrogate.

The Location

 The Duchy of Lancaster operates from two principal locations: The Head office in London and Lancaster Castle in Lancaster. The Duchy is also in the process of developing a small satellite office in Yorkshire. This role will be working between Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The person

  • MRICS with at least 7+ years post qualification experience and a proven track record in rural estate management and a passion for the rural environment.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the energy and enthusiasm needed to develop a thorough understanding of this broad asset base.
  • Confident with strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • A team player and able to work independently with minimum supervision when required.
